Title: BEWARE! - E & A College, Qinhuangdao, China
|
Author: Derek Graham <travellingteacher(at)lycos.co.uk>
For any teachers out there who come across this college advertising for teachers then please avoid them like the plague. Myself and six other teachers began working there last September and finished in July this year. From the day we arrived they made every aspect of our lives as difficult as possible, professionally as well as privately. If you have already signed a contract then there's only one thing for itˇˇˇˇˇ.run for your lives!

I could have sved myself the hazzles and harrasment of my employer English First in Hefei.
The owner Peter Chu withheld my last months pay. He reported me to the PSB and had my residence permit revoked. He told the police I stole thing from the apartment I shared with another girl, but nothing was stolenm. I was given 2 days to leave the country after I tried to end my year contract early.
My advise is read these notices about schools carefully before choosing a school to work at.

I came over to China with the promise of a teaching job waiting for me, however, the job on offer was a fake, as was the contract. After about a month I took a job, but after teaching for four weeks at Hengshui High school (see Hebei Black List)I left the agency and went it alone, only to find that the reason I got no work, was that the agency were charging extortionate rates for introducing me to schools.

So anyway. I never signed a contract with this Mr.Dong, due to the fact that he was "processing" my passport. Originally it was to take 10 days. 10 days became 15, then 20, then 1 month. All I ever heard was "NO PROBLEM, NO PROBLEM. DON'T WORRY".

I signed a contract with the school which stated I would teach 14 classes a week and any extra classes would be taught by mutual agreement. However, after teaching the extra classes for 4 weeks, I then found that my Chinese contract was different from my English one and that I would only receive 15% of the normal hourly rate. I then refused to do any extra hours and was forcably removed from the school and not paid for the work I had taught.
The appartment was also supposably fully furnished, but turned out to be infested, had no running water and therefore an extremely smelly toilet.

The fact that we feel the need to warn future teachers about coming to Jingbei shows that there are some serious problems with the school. The constant dishonesty and browbeating that takes place in almost every contact with the school authorities, and their insistence upon our teaching at outside schools (an hour's drive from Jingbei) make life here stressful and uncomfortable.

He agreed to pay us for one month of our winter holiday, and when we returned he refused to give it to us until Council intervened.
After American teacher Mark French died at the school, authorities made up a separate contract for use of electrical appliances. All of the foreign teachers refused to sign it because of the final item, which removed all responsibility from the school in case of an accident. We doubt that the electrical setup in our rooms meets any kind of safety requirements.
