Title: EF Taiyuan - an objective review
|
Author: John Etchells
Send Message to Author
I'm posting this letter in response to a letter posted on 1st August 2005, by Cecilia Calvo-Lewis, regards her teaching experience at English First in Taiyuan. This response is purely to bring some objectivity to the comments made by her, and not to defend or attack either the school or her. Some of my comments are unrelated to the letter written by Cecilia Calvo-Lewis, and are purely my own opinions.

I was with the EF English First Faculty for two years. The only good thing about the place was the people I worked with. So before I begin, I would just like to apologize to the teachers and some of the Chinese staff who, because of their personal sense of obligation, are still there.

G-maple has high-turnover of everything because they screw all of its workers around. That should be expected with a boss who can be quoted for accussing all foreigners who teach in China of being losers.
John Gao's school (Gao xi jie I think) is worse where you live with him and get low pay, all contrary to the contract. He delights in verbally abusing young women.
Number 2 foreign language school (AKA number 18 middle/high school) is really great all around except for extreme discipline problems. Doubt I'll teach there next year because getting paid to yell for an hour doesn't seem worth it.
Modern English doesn't have a permit to hire foreigners and often gets shut down. However, the owner is rich, so it usually re-opens after a month or so.
People's Number Two Hospital has an English program, but they don't see the reason in paying much at all and they usually work through G-maple (see above).
The Shanxi university has had some problems in the past with foreigners, but I lack the details to say much else about it than that.

I have just come across a rather insulting piece of information about this college that has disturbed me greatly.

Title: RE: Richard Soulliere's comments

Author: Brian Sands <bmsands(at)hotmail.com>
O'Smart is a great school. I've been here for almost 3 years. Richard is so negative cuz he is a homosexual and he felt ostracized by the chinese staff as this is not common in this otherwise beautiful country. Did anyone notice how many reviews that 'tard posted? Try holding a job you pig! One of the happiest days I've ever had was the day you left, not cuz you're homosexual, although I didn't appreciate the advances you made towards me, but because you were such a loser!
I hope you choke on your own superiority complex! (and try kissing a girl for once) That's not illegal here.

Title: Taiyuan Schools Questionable at Best
|
Author: Richard Soulliere <tarzaninchina(at)yahoo.ca>
- the School did not give me a Foreign Experts Certificate.
- the school aims to cheat all of its teachers and most of its staff out of money.
- when I asked for a letter of release, they said they would only do so if I gave them $2,000 USD
- the Chinese lessons were arranged.
- a newbie who recently started there, but left because they docked 100% of his pay and required that he pay them an additional 300+ RMB.
- they have hired various teachers from all over the world, but force those not from North America to lie and say they're from the USA

- pays on-time and in the correct amount
- usually loaded with OT
- have to hound for the government documents, but if you do that, they'll return your passport, residence permit, and foreign experts certificate to you after 3 weeks

Title: Taiyuan Mercan School in Shanxi province *DECENT*

Author: Myles <myles.dolphin(at)gmail.com>
So that's it. There's no more foreign DOS. The schedules are shady, things aren't run very well, there's no support for the teachers, the staff is all over the place, it's China basically; but people come to this school for money, and for money alone. And for that my friends, it's worth it!

Title: AVOID Mercan - Taiyuan
|
Author: Richard Soulliere <tarzaninchina(at)yahoo.ca>
Although much can be said of Taiyuan, this school stands out in the sense that it¡äs the lesser of most evils.
The boss doens¡ät mind foreigners depending on their personality and their ability to make him money. He will give you every run around imaginable in any negoatiation before it¡äs over. Expect BS every time.
The school will pay you what they owe you on time, but that¡äs all they do right or effectively. The boss is also a control freak. He controls what the Chinese staff say to you as well as your life by getting you an apartment way out there. If you don¡ät mind not having a social life with BS at every turn, give this place a shot.
Oh yeah, any daytime jobs they¡äll give you at other public schools are illegal. When caught that¡äs a huge fine and deportation. But the boss and his wife don¡ät mind¡. Neither will they when they ask you to forge signatures for them.

In China you never know what schools are "good or bad" like it is a moral issues. As for Taiyuan Modern English they pay but don't give you respect. They'll do anything to save money and their face. Be careful while working there. Demand that you have a ZED Visa and work hours less than twenty hours. Would I work there again? Yeh, if they give me American wages again but for nothing lower.

- OK for a one-year stint and they'll usually provide a reference letter
- the dean of the English Department has no tact and expects everybody to obey his orders, hence his general dislike for questioning foreigners
- getting materials and the like can be problematic (at best)
- any contract amendments are verbal or they don't happen at all
