They deduct 2,000 Pounds sterling, which they pay as a living allowance of 2,000RMB per month (approx 133 pounds). This is about 1500 pounds a year, so you are losing 500 pounds a year before you start!!

If you are applying for a job on their pre-undergraduate or their pre-masters programme, you should check you contract carefully before you sign it. Teaching staff throughout China are currently indispute with management over their salary. Advertisements quote a sterling salary, but the contract itself is a sterling and a Chinese salary ie two separate contracts - these contracts DO NOT add up to the advertised sterling salary. Staff on the pre-master's programme are losing ¡ê60 to approximatly ¡ê150 a month because this. There is bad feeling and a general perception ACE are screwing us. Note that in the pre-undergraduate programme most staff are NOT renewing their contracts for this and other reasons.

Chengdu Oriental Bilingual School in Longquan, Sichuan. I worked there for a few months when they first started using foreign teachers. It was a rough experience due to bad American management and lack of support from the Chinese management, e.g. no teaching materials, even for a class taught five days a week. The apartment, shared, was just so so, not properly prepared for us. The teachers were supportive, and the kids in the primary school were great, but the middle school ones were lazy. That was a few years ago, and they must have learned something by now, but check it out if you're thinking of going there. Call the FAO director and consulate, etc., for their opinions.
The Cambridge School in Qitaihe. I worked there for a couple of months until the police shut down the operation, very greedy police.
Lovely people but the classes were uncontrolable, just too many kids and too much carrying-on.
Renshou No1 High School. I worked there for 2 1/2 years. Above average in most respects, but teaching is still not fulfilling much of the time. Avoid Junior 2 & 3. Bad feng shui and dirty, disorderly area around school. Hills nearby. Rough long ride to Chengdu by bus.
Sunny's English Club is good for Sichuan, but a couple of years ago, some people complained of raw deals. Lately, people are content with her service, which is arrangeing jobs, visas, and so on. I've worked with both these people.

She will promise you a private apartment. That will not happen. If it does happen, it will be filthy-dirty, there will be no furniture, there will be one-1940¡äs-type television set, no air conditioner, no heater, minimal bedding if any, etc., etc. She will move you from one apartment to another until she finally has you in the cheapest apartment she can find.
She will pay your first month¡äs salary on time. From then on, each month, there will be "deductions" from the salary. One teacher had her pay reduced from RMB 5,500 to RMB 1,600. Another teacher had his pay reduced by RMB 2,000, another by 3,500, etc., etc. You will be promised one amount and paid another. If you object, you will be threatened with jail, with deportation, with the police, etc, etc. All of the teachers run away very quickly, most of them in the middle of the night.

It's already been 9 mos. Since I finished 2 yrs at Golden Apple Mei Yu Kindergarten in the Zongbei district of Chengdu, but I still think abt my kids (taught them from age 3-5) from time to time and overall had a positive experience. The staff was friendly and really cared abt the foreign teachers. We had 5 there in all.

Chengdu is the best city I have lived in in China. My boss- Nigel Jones, a Brit who spoke fluent Chinese and was co-owner, was great. The kids were great, too as were the Chinese assistants Nicole and Annie. A very good place to work.

I really enjoyed my first term at Renshou Middle School. The other teachers were friendly and welcomed me, even though they could speak very little English. The students were enthusiastic and eager to learn.

Basically they offer huge salaries (10,000RMB+ per month) to attract as many Fes as they can so they have a choice. I was offered a job with a high salary.Once I arrived they had a number of Fes hooked and handed everyone a standard contract for the normal Sichuan salary (around 5,000RMB) but with increased hours!. The excuse was "our investor has decided to reduce salaries this year".
I have had several years teaching in China and offer the following warning: Sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between lies and communication problems due to language and culture. Some Chinese will use communication problems as a way of lying or avoiding the issue. But remember little lies at the start are a warning - it wont stop!

Within months I was asked to teach at other local schools, the main campus school of WenJiang Middle School, and all added to the 20 hour per week workload, but without any extra benefit though the school was charging the other local schools for me being there. Their WaiBan basically left me on my own on campus to figure out my way around within the first week. There were no translators for the classes, and no assistant to help with classroom control. The Junior grades were in some serious need of control. Just keeping them in their seats was a chore.
