Our contact with this school began as such: a certain F. contacted us and she assured us that the school can provide legal documents.
We sent her our resident permits and passports in order to start the procedures and we sent our belongings in about 30 boxes. When we arrived in Yiwu, we saw nothing of the city that she had described (you can find foreign food here, she ensured us) and soon found out how they had treated the renewal of our residence permit: our documents were kept in a drawer!!! Never mind that we insisted on the fact that we will not work without legal status and send out documents through EMS so that they can begin the processing, the school didn¡¯t do anything.

Contract is not honoured, accommodations are terrible (dormatory is like a jail) and food is mostly cold and very unappetizing. The city has no life and is there is nothing to do there in the evenings.

Author: Michael <egechi22(at)aol.com>
I wanted to write in response to criticism of the Babel Language Center written by Dr. Jeannette W. Cockroft and posted on the ESL Caf¨¦ website. It seems clear that she had an unpleasant experience in China but I also know many teachers including myself who had very positive experiences working for Babel in China.

Don't pay any recruiter a single dollar; Chinese schools aid in your travel expences and they pay you a salary that either has a small percentage taken as a legitimate fee, or is outright stolen by your recruiter: Journey East. Anything said to you by a recruiter is bullshit. That's their job.

DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT YOUR TREATMENT BY THE REPRESENTATIVES OF BABEL (Hangzhou Babel Language School)! They have an impossible job; their very careers depend upon insuring your safety and happiness, while informing you of the many demands that a school expects to to carry out. They were put in a despicable situation, like you, due to the lies of an intermediately: your recruiter.

The legal situation and the rip-off in China is rampant. I was cheated by a person calling himself TONY in Hangzhou. I want everyone to know of him. TONY is based in Beijing and Tianging. He sent me to a middle school in Hangzhou and they did not pay me nor did he. The school had no intent of keeping me and TONY said that they did. TONY did not pay a very good employee as well. What can be done to tell everyone to beware of TONY and Hangzhou Middle School?

Title: Stay away from Helen ChinaTEFL!
|
Author: kev7161
At the end of the 3rd week this past Saturday (07/31), I was called into the office of ChinaTEFL to tell me my contract was terminated as all the kids were going home and there were no more kids to teach. I would still be paid full salary, which is also good.I had already been given my meal stipend and the extra 1000 at the beginning so I was expecting my 6500 at this time. Not to be. On Saturday I was also informed that, since the program lasted only three weeks (did they not know this 3 weeks ago?), they were going to take BACK 25% of my meal stipend (300rmb) and 25% of the extra 1000 (250rmb) - - nevermind the fact that the 1000 was part of my contracted salary and nevermind that 1000rmb was certainly much less than what they would have paid out for a hotel room for me.

Basically, this organization is VASTLY unorganized. So many people are/were very unhappy last summer (including me) due to abrupt cancellation of the program and the company not fulfilling their agreements (at least to me). Many teachers were milling about the office after their camps were canceled wondering what to do about rebooking air flights at the last minute or having to pay for their own hotel rooms for another week (now that the program was over, no more freebies) along with food, transportation and other expenses.

Schools in the city I teach tend to honor all the contracts that the foreign teachers have signed. It's not a big city with lots to do, but there are places to go out and tons of places to eat. Shanghai and Hangzhou are only an hour away each, so if you're ever bored, it's not far to fun places! The school has been very accomodating and even gives an advance on salary if I need it. They are extremely nice people and tried very hard to make my stay there as comfortable and nice as possible. I have heard more positives than negatives, but STAY AWAY FROM JOURNEYEAST.*** it's just a scam you don¡¯t need to pay them all the money they make you pay them to go to China. They are a terrible organization.

The school is a private school, and hence the students are here because they have been kicked out of the public school system ( due to their laziness, bad behaviour, bad marks etcetc ) - though the management here don't advise you just how bad they are before you sign the contract - honestly $10000 / month would still not be enough.

I taught at the Wenzhou University for two years from August 2002 until July 2004. I have always been paid on time. The university usually abides by the provisions of its Contract with you. The main advice is to "negotiate, negotiate, negotiate" for what you want before you sign any Contract. It is much harder to get additional benefits, or extra amenities, once you are signed up!

My husband and I left Gibsons, B.C. Canada in the autumn of 2003 and came to teach at the Zhejiang Trade School and College in Jinhua, China,3 hours from Shanghai. We are living on a small campus in a terrific apartment with several lotus flowers in bloom beneath our balcony. I fine tuned our contract and we have not only been treated with respect, and all promises fulfilled but we feel we have learned as much as we taught if not more. Many of our students are from the countryside and are enthusiastic, cheerful inspiring beings. We were provided a computer in our apartment internet access, comfortable furniture, washing machine and our director has been attentive to all our needs. Our colleagues and many new friends are all interesting welcoming people. Although our contract is nearly over, we think often of a possible return.

Pay was generally ok, though they did stiff me on some overtime. They always ask teachers to teach more than they say on the website, then offer partial but not full overtime pay.
