| In praise of Shenzhen | ||
| I have spend 7 years and a few months in Shenzhen, the twin city of Hong Kong. I found this the most congenial place to live and work due to the proximity of Hong Kong. It does not mean that all places of work are "good"; I got ripped off twice, which is yet not all that much. Shenzhen is good for the following: -I stayed in one suburb Shekou for most of the time. It took only a short cab ride to Shekou Harbour for an easy ride to HK - In Hk visas are easily available, this means you do not need to give your passport to the PSB and worse, to your employer, who can keep it to keep you prisoner. -In Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Guanzhou you are really expected to look after yourself for Visas;I know it is illegal but I have been legal only 2 years and never got in trouble. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking corporation offers a 95 Hk dollar a month travel insurance which has a large hospital costs content. It works if you make a HK/SZ crossing at least every 2 months - Sending money home via HK is a breeze as compared to the paper war that is necessary if you live and work inland. For R and R ; books and music…. HK kept me sane -If you need or want to skip out, it is very easy and no one will ask why you are going or search you. I have crossed the border countless times, even with far too much money and it is a breeze. -Shenzhen and Shekou is money city, while Baoan is equally a money pit. -Shekou is relatively less polluted as on one side is the sea, though it is getting filled in, it also means that the new yuan(plural) hold customers; the place is full of kindies, primary and middle schools. -It has a Wal Mart….cheese and milk |
