| Be you white you welcomed to teach English in China | ||
| Good to discover this forum where one can share his/her experience to future teachers wanting to make a fortune in China. Its surprising to note that in China what teaches is nationality and not qualifications.I have been teaching in China for the past three years and believe me some of the so called english teachers do make a fool of themselves. Teachers who are so short sighted, limited and know nothing in terms of the subject matter but for the fact that Chinese schools cheerish anything with the barner,Native speaker. What seems to be important is the pay day when they have to go for their salaries. I happened to have noted one thing in china. I don`t know whether it was by error or by design that I happened to have taught with three black teachers. What may be good to know is that, they were all Africans by birth. But believe me or not, these were the most devoted teachers I have ever taught with in my life. Most of them showed a mastery of the subject matter eventhough a few words were pronounced differently. But I hope if by error I do come to China again I will wanna teach in any of the schools were I will continue to share my experience with African and black teachers. China is a diverse country with a history and culture. But I do strongly believe that the one child policy in China has helped to lower the educational standards in China. Chinese students fine delight in sleeping in class as early as 7:45am. Most of them don`t really fine the interest in learning especially english and all what they tell you is that, my parents forced me to come here. Most are passive listeners and will prefer to sleep. Most chinese students hate to answer questions in class or better still wanna practice their spoken English. This explains why spoken English in china is still much to be desired. Chinese students can be very naughty, just knowing that you are an American sends them crazy with joy. But believe me they are very slow to learn and their tongues are dam heavy to speak men! Some other parts in china can be very frustrating to teach in. Some have never seen a foreigner before let alone my black brothers/sisters and they will certainly embarrass you at times. Always shouting Meiguo-Meiguo and go asking you very personal questions. This is very impolite of chinese people but they see this as a sign of their hospitality. Well you may at times need a crash course in anthropology if you have to travel around china at times. Some of their cultures are really shocking and you fine people coming real close to you the first second they see you. All the english most of them do master is hallo! Bye-bye and no further. What remains good about China is that Chinese food is pretty delicious and you learn how to eat with sticks. Salaries in China are pretty low. Maybe they feel ,most foreigners lack jobs in their countries and china has a fortune to offer. This explains why any Tom, Dick and Harry if only you are white can easily teach in China. What I`m insinuating here is that most African teachers are more qualified than some of the so called white native speakers. Most of them have polish their English and you cannot fine any major diference. Chinese people talk so much on accent but cannot differentiate between any of them. Well if you are a white be you a culprit and wanna make a fortune, hurry to China but if you are a black even if your accent is good and you are qualified, you will have to wait till all the whites have been absorbed first. It`s high times Chinese schools and employers have to change their mechanical reasoning and help the entire Chinese community. Nationality or color dosen`t teach. I`m white myself.
