| My previous boss, due to their problems in hiring foreigners, has recently contacted me. There are some articles on the web that are against their school, Walton Language School, and them in particular. I have worked there for only 6 months and decided to share my opinion with you all, in the most honest of ways. I personally never had big problems with the bosses. Payments were always on schedule and so were any other basic necessities such as place to live and visa issues. I was asked if I wanted overtime, and willingly accepted, although I must admit that the occasional extra hour could appear…but that wasn't a news. All the jobs I have had have been similar, extras happen. I have always been paid and treated with respect by my employers, but that is also because I have never allowed them to do any different, speaking up any time I thought something was wrong. Issues in the school have been brought up: racism being the biggest. I do though believe that a lot of this is to do with China's culture and development. I have met lovely and kind people in China as a most (I lived there for 2.5 years) but I have also found a lot of discrimination against black or other Asian people. (I'm sorry if this is not written in a political correct way). Money is the main issue for the bosses, but again, I believe it is for most of the people who have a business and life to run. The staff working at Walton is great. I have left many friends in Huadu, who I miss very much. In brief, I believe Huadu is a good China experience. It is small enough to get a grasp on China's life and close to Guangzhou when you need a break. Work can have problems, but money and visas are ok, which is one's main concern when going abroad. China's culture can be particular, it is based on relationships and exchange of favours, but that is also something to learn. I had a great time teaching there. Any problems I had were always solved, rather quickly. Staff and I got on really well and so with the students. Other issues linked with the teaching problems…well it is a slow process, mostly due to the different vision of life that east west have…. For the rest I learnt that not letting anybody walk on one self creates respect and the same for doing your job as well as possible. All together I believe it isn't bad. Problems come and go and tend to be similar, but it is safe. For further information on questions, please contact kimanne@libero.it Kim Anne, London |
