Talent English Club - Xipu Village - Zhuhai GD
I have been working at Talent English Club in Xipu Village, Zhuhai City, Guangdong since mid-September. It's the same old story; promises of a Z visa, a contract, high salary, furnished accommodation and so on, but in the end it was all just one big lie after another.
The English Club first opened on 19th September. Xipu is over an hour from the centre of Zhuhai and it's a small, dirty place where there is little to do. English Corner runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm every night.
I was promised 6,000 rmb per month, but in fact was not paid for the first 3 weeks - not a penny - and now I am only working 3 nights a week for 3,000. Why am I still here? This time of year there are few other good positions in the area, so I'm having to sit tight for the time being. I have no contract and am working on a tourist visa. The 'boss' Ken Zhang is a salesman who has no idea about running a business and treats me and his other 2 teachers with contempt. My 2 colleagues are great, and I am happy that we get on so well. We share an appartment that was so dirty and bare to begin with I almost couldn't bear it. It's taken a lot of hard work to make it into our home. And even the simple promise of a water cooler was a lie, and in the end we had to buy one ourselves. If you don't mind boiling a kettle and washing in a bucket, then you'll love the bathroom facilities. We did get a western toilet, but it never got connected to the water main, but it's not so hard to use a bucket when you need to flush.
Oh, yes, and no real matresses on the beds - if you can bear an inch of foam and a straw mat, you won't be uncomfortable.
And if you hate TV, then this may be the place for you. The TV he promised just didn't appear. And who needs a sofa anyway? Or a phone?
So let this be a warning to you. I know that there are trustworthy and honest employers out there, but this guy isn't one of them. He just wants to get rich quick. The good news is that he couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery.
