| Hi, I worked at the Yangpu Shiyan Experimental School for six months in 2003. I have nothing but positive comments about my time there. Yangpu is a small (by Chinese standards) fishing village on the west coast of Hainan Island (two hours from Haikou by bus). The school is separated into two sites (Primary school/ Middle school)about 3 kilometers apart. I worked in both. My contract was teaching a class in every grade (probably something I wouldn't agree to do again). I found the Principal (Mr Chen) very helpful and accommodating. The senior teachers were also helpful and friendly, as were the class teachers. The classes are large (45-65 Ss). The primary Ss are responsive and keen and the high school Ss, while typical teenagers, were also good. My apartment was good and Mr Chen responded to my requests for some items immediately. The school has renovated two apartments for foreign teachers. The apartments are on the seaside but the closest swimming beach is down the road about two/three kilometers. The Town has several markets and numerous shops. No western style fast food outlets buts lots of eateries about the place. There is not a lot of night life, but there is a couple of open-air dance floors and open air pool tables. The Principal allowed me to holiday on the mainland in summer(During my time there, the senior teachers were allowed a paid holiday to one of two nominated places on the mainland each year, the junior teachers get a holiday on Hainan Island). He also gave me time off during exam times and had his driver deliver the odd carton of beer to me! I am not saying this happened, or will happen to everyone who works there, but it did for me. This place is recommended to people who view their job with professional pride and seek a quieter location to experience China. Those who have an understanding and tolerance of other cultures, and who are willing to live them while they are there. If you need a bit of the big smoke, then Haikou is just two hours away by bus. Expect some really hot weather (especially in May/June). Send Message to Author |
